Reach your goals as a vocalist.
If you have a passion for singing and want to continue developing your skills as a vocalist in college, consider joining one of University of Jamestown’s choirs and/or taking voice lessons.
What’s it like to participate in choir at UJ?
Each of our choirs is dedicated to musical excellence. At the same time, we are committed to being an inclusive community that encourages everyone to continue singing, no matter their major or level of experience. You read that right! You don’t need to major in music to participate in choir at UJ.
Our singers represent most academic majors on campus and are heavily involved in other activities like Student Senate, Residence Life, and many athletic teams. While in choir, students study and perform diverse musical works that represent a variety of historical and cultural perspectives, allowing them to enhance their understanding of the larger community.
Concert Choir
What originally started as a glee club in the early 1900s has become a fundamental piece of the University of Jamestown. Members of the Concert Choir at the University of Jamestown sing a wide variety of repertoire and are given numerous performing opportunities – all while creating lifelong friendships.
Continuing the 80+ year tradition, the Concert Choir regularly travels domestically during the Spring semester and internationally every few years. This ensemble hears auditions in the Fall or by special appointment.
Vox Angelus
Vox Angelus, originally called Chapel Choir, was founded as a soprano/alto choral group that sang music for church services at Voorhees Chapel on UJ’s Jamestown campus. Today, Vox Angelus continues the tradition of singing for local churches as outreach and has also expanded its range to be more involved with the music department and sings a variety of styles of music. This ensemble is not auditioned.
Cantus
Cantus is a tenor/bass choir that started spring 2024 as interest grew in offering other types of vocal ensembles. Like Vox Angelus, Cantus performs both in annual events like Homecoming and the Christmas concert, and also provides outreach to local schools and churches. This ensemble is not auditioned.
Vocal Lessons
Singers can also study private voice to enhance their personal musicianship and understanding of their own voice. Lessons are weekly, individualized half-hour meetings tailored to your goals and aspirations for singing.
