Kyle ‘Bubba’ Schweigert(’85) named Coach of the Year
Bubba Schweigert(’85) guided University of North Dakota to its first Big Sky Conference football title in 2016. For his efforts, Schweigert was named the league’s coach of the year.
After and 0-2 start — with road losses to Stony Brook and FBS Bowling Green by a combined five points — the Fighting Hawks reeled off nine consecutive victories to finish 9-2 overall and a perfect 8-0 in Big Sky play.
UND shared the conference crown with Eastern Washington (10-1, 8-0).
The Fighting Hawks, the No. 7 seed for the upcoming FCS postseason, have a bye this week then will host either Richmond or North Carolina A&T in a second-round playoff game next week. It will be their first-ever Division I playoff game.
In Schweigert’s three-year stint as coach, UND has improved every year, going from 5-6 in 2014 to 7-4 last year to 9-2 this season.
Schweigert is a Zeeland, N.D., native and graduated from University of Jamestown in 1985 with a BA in Business Administration and Health, Physical Education & Recreation.
