Becoming a Jimmie

Growing up, I told myself I would never stay in Jamestown for college. I was convinced I would miss out on meeting new people and having enough opportunities if I stayed in town for another four years. However, I was so wrong growing up, and I made one of the best decisions by staying in Jamestown to attend University of Jamestown.

College Knowledge

Looking back on my years in college, I smile. I smile because of everything I have accomplished, all of the friends and memories I have made, and the amount of growth that has come within these few years. I have learned more in these past years of college than I ever imagined possible. So yes, college has taught me a few things over the years; but, what I would consider the most important things? That’s easy.

1. Everything happens for a reason. The good and the bad. You found an extra $10 on the sidewalk? Go buy yourself a cup of coffee and thank a stranger for that one. Your parents sent you money the same week the Jimmie Store is having a sale? It’s time to stock up on some new clothes. You lost your Jimmie Punch Card? I’m convinced that’s worse than losing money. You failed the test you studied all night for? It’s all going to be okay, because there will be another one, and you’ll kill it. Every single thing that happens to you, happens for a reason. Every single experience you have will help shape you into the person you are meant to be.
2. Pray. I am not saying you have to believe in the same God I believe in, or any God at all. It doesn’t matter how you do this. It doesn’t matter what God you do or do not pray to. Just pray. Pray for yourself, for your friends, for your family, for the random girl you saw struggling across campus. Really, just pray for anything you feel the desire to pray for. The power of prayer is a neat thing.
3. Love. Love your friends. Love the memories you are making. Love the fact that you are able to experience college, even if that means attending an 8 a.m. class. Love yourself, too. That one may be the most important for your success and growth during these four years of your life. Love is neat, and powerful, and so, so wonderful. Don’t forget to love while you’re in college.

Although there is so much more that I have learned throughout my time at UJ, I think those three things really sum up what I’ve learned the most about. University of Jamestown has provided me with experiences and knowledge these past four years that I will forever hold dear.

To University of Jamestown – thank you. Thank you for providing me with four years of my life I will never forget. Thank you for providing me with an education, one with professors who care about my success in and out of the classroom (while also allowing me to cry in their office or pretend I’m dropping out of college any time something goes wrong—Dr. Brock and Dr. Stotts, I’d especially be lost without you two). Thank you for bringing me to some of the most amazing people and allowing me to form friendships that will last a lifetime. Thank you for the four years of memories that will forever hold a special place in my heart. Thank you for being the best decision I have made. I will forever be grateful for University of Jamestown.
