We’re here to help.
The Technology Helpdesk, located in Sorkness 105, is here to help keep technology running smoothly. That includes helping you when you run into specific issues, from setting up Cable TV to connecting to the UJ network—and everything in between.
Whether you are a student, faculty or staff member, please review the Technology Orientation document to familiarize yourself with UJ’s procedures.
Troubleshooting
Before submitting a trouble ticket or coming to the Helpdesk please try the following techniques:
- Restart your computer
- Make sure all power cables, video cables, and USB cables are firmly plugged into the computer.
- Be able to tell us what application you are using, what you were doing, and exactly what happened.
- Document any error message you receive and do an internet search for the message.
If you are still unable to solve the problem, fill out a Helpdesk Trouble Ticket or stop by the Helpdesk during business hours.

There are computer labs with printers located in each dorm. In addition to the dorms, there are computer labs in the following buildings:
- Orlady
- Foss
- Library
- Lyngstad
- Sorkness
- Unruh-Sheldon
Each of the computer labs will have a printer automatically configured, as well as major-specific software relevant to that particular building. If you have any questions, about the computer labs, please consult our FAQ page.

Each computer lab and dorm has at least one printer. University-owned lab computers will automatically have the closest printer pre-configured. Please us this guide to learn how to connect to a printer.
At the beginning of each semester, students will receive $30 worth of printing credit. Each black and white page costs $0.05 and each color page is $0.25, with a 40% discount for any document that is printed in duplex, meaning front and back. Not all printers support duplex printing. The main printers, such as the printers in the library and Unruh Sheldon classrooms, support duplex printing.
If a student runs out of printing credits, they may ask a fellow student to transfer credit via the PaperCut Account Management portal or the student may stop by the Helpdesk (Sorkness 105) to add more printing credit. Only cash or check is accepted.
Specific policies and procedures are in place to ensure the safety and security of UJ’s network, information systems, and data. Please review this guide for more information.
Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA)
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), as amended, affords eligible students certain rights with respect to their education records. (An “eligible student” under FERPA is a student who is 18 years of age or older or who attends a postsecondary institution at any age.)
These rights include:
- The right to inspect and review the student’s education records within 45 days after the day the University of Jamestown (University) receives a request for access.
- The right to request the amendment of the student’s education records that the student believes is inaccurate, misleading, or otherwise in violation of the student’s privacy rights under FERPA.
- The right to provide written consent before the University discloses personally identifiable information (PII) from the student’s education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent. See examples online at the link below.
- The right to request directory information not to be made public. See categories online at the link below.
- The right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by the University to comply with the requirements of FERPA.
How to give a parent/guardian FERPA permission:
- Log in to MyUJ (https://my.uj.edu)
- Go to the Students tab.
- Click on the FERPA page in the left-hand navigation menu.
- Follow the directions for “Granting FERPA Permission” (NOTE – You will need to define FERPA permissions for everyone you would like to give permission to by filling out one form for each person.)
- Once submitted, information will then be reviewed and accepted by the registrar and added to your official UJ student records. The person to which you have given access will receive an email to the address that you submitted, notifying them of the permissions that they have been granted. If the person does not already have a MyUJ account, one will be created for them, and they will be able to access the information you have given them permission to through a “Parent” tab in MyUJ.
For additional information about the directory restriction request, removal of directory restriction, or the notification of rights, visit the following link: https://www.uj.edu/current-student/forms-handbooks-policies/privacy
The University of Jamestown uses Canvas for its Learning Management System (LMS). Canvas will be used to access your course material and interact with your courses’ content. You can learn more about Canvas here.

Clearing the Cache and Cookies from a web browser an important first-step for almost any troubleshooting for internet browsing. The ‘cache’ is a tool used by your internet browser to speed up the page loading process. However, sometimes it can cause a problem when websites are updated and developed as files saved in the cache may conflict with what’s actually coded into the website. Clearing Cache and Cookies is a way we can be sure that any issues you may come across are actually something wrong with the website, rather than inconsistencies caused by using different browsers. This guide will give you instructions on how to clear the cache on some of the most popular web browsers.
